Our next project is to learn to code for the iPhone, but until we do, it occurred to us that we could do some applications self-contained in a HTML file using Javascript. Any mobile device with multitasking should be able to run this type program without access to the internet. It is probably easiest to store the files on Dropbox, a free application. If you don’t have Dropbox, contact us and we will send you a link (and get some free storage for ourselves too!). If you use the “star” to mark the program as a Favorite in Dropbox on your mobile device, you will not have to access the web to use it.

The first application we have developed is a tennis score keeper. It is designed to work with World Team Tennis or any Pro Sets or standard sets. It can be used to keep the score within a game, but more importantly, the game and set totals. Each time a set is completed, or a name changes, or on demand, it creates a “Mark”. The “Marks” can be emailed at anytime. It is currently on our public drop box. You may download it from there.

Screen Shot version 2.22

To use it, enter the names of the two players or teams. Then click in the scorecard to record a win. If you are playing World Team Tennis and change the names during play it will record the number of games each had won before the change. It will also record the end of set scores. It records the time each time you click the name so if you aren’t sure whether or not you have clicked it, just check the time. Please contact us with changes you would like, or let us know if it works for you.

To give you a little history, we play on public courts. Any score keeping devices keep getting destroyed, so we are on our own. We first made a simple document with the valid scores, and used clothes pins to indicate the scores. It held up to the weather for several months.

Version 1

Later we found letter size magnetic boards on sale at Staples for $1. We printed this document onto a large label and attached it, and bought some inexpensive magnets to indicate games won. We keep the board and magnets in a plastic bag with our tennis gear. A friend suggested we sell them as everyone loves them. But, instead, we thought we would try the javascript/HTML project.

Version 2 on Magnetic Board
